Curriculum Overview
Myton PE department aim to create a lifelong passion for sport, exercise and healthy living. We encourage confident and reflective learners who are independent and eager to succeed. The opportunity to participate in school sport will allow pupils to develop an enthusiasm to exercise as well as develop important life skills such as teamwork, commitment, leadership and discipline. The PE department will do this by providing students with many opportunities to take part in a wide range of sporting activities and games, both within the curriculum and as part of our extra-curricular programme. We endeavour to provide an educational experience that creates an enjoyable, safe and inclusive learning environment where abilities are nurtured and students are supported to overcome barriers.
Key Stage 3
Throughout Years 7-9 students will have the opportunity to learn and take part in many sports which can be seen in our curriculum plan. Embedded within this wide range of sports is our Head, Heart, Hands curriculum, whereby students are taught and given the opportunity to experience and practice the aspects within each strand which we believe are vital to nurturing a passion for sport and exercise. Students will also have access to our extensive extra-curricular programme which offers both lunch time and after school sports where students can take part for enjoyment or for competition against other schools.
Key Stage 4
When students start Year 10 they will transition into our Performance & Participation Curriculum. Students that choose the GCSE PE option will be on the performance pathway and therefore be in a dedicated PE group where the focus is on their sporting performance to support their GCSE practical grading. Students that do not choose GCSE PE will be on the participation pathway where by the focus is all about nurturing long lasting enjoyment for sport and exercise as well as teaching key concepts such a resilience, goal setting and health & fitness.
As mentioned above, when students select their options in Year 9, they will an opportunity to choose our GCSE PE option. If they are passionate and showing an interest in the world of sport as well as showing high competence in a number of sports and/or frequently playing competitive sports outside of school then this is the option for them! In GSCE PE, students are assessed academically and practically across a 2 year course. They will still participate in their normal Core PE lessons and will gain an extra 5 GCSE PE periods on their timetable, 4 being in a classroom and 1 being a practical lesson.
