What is Pupil Premium?
The Pupil Premium was introduced by the Government in April 2011 to provide support for looked after children and those from low income families. Pupil Premium funding is in addition to main school funding, and it is one way to address current underlying inequalities between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. The extra funding is made available to schools to help them narrow the attainment gap that still exists between pupils from disadvantaged and more affluent backgrounds.
Those in receipt of the Pupil Premium must be in school years 7-11 and will fall in to one of these categories:
- The student is eligible for Free School Meals (FSM).
- The student has been eligible for Free School Meals at some point in the last 6 years (Ever 6).
- The student is a child of parent(s) in the Armed Forces.
- The student has been adopted from the care of the local authority.
- The student is a looked after child (LAC).
During the 2022/23 school year, the value of the Pupil Premium Ever 6 and FSM grant is £985 per student. For looked after children and those adopted from care, the value is £2,410 per student.

Why is the Pupil Premium important?
National research shows that students from disadvantaged backgrounds underachieve compared to their non-disadvantaged peers. Often, children who are entitled to pupil premium face challenges such as poor language and communication skills, lack of confidence and issues with attendance and punctuality. The Pupil Premium is provided in order to support these pupils in reaching their full potential by accelerating their progress.
Free school meals
Did you know that when you successfully apply for free school meals, Myton School will receive this extra government funding, even if your child does not want the meal? Once you qualify for free school meals you may also get help with things like transport costs, school trips and uniform.
It’s really easy to apply and if your application is successful, money for school meals is automatically credited to your child’s ParentPay account for them to use in school.
