At Myton, we are passionate about empowering our students to become word rich—confident readers, articulate speakers, and skilled writers who communicate like scholars.
Every day, our students are immersed in Tier 1 vocabulary: the familiar, everyday words we all use. We also recognise the importance of Tier 3 vocabulary—those subject-specific and technical terms essential for academic success. However, it’s the Tier 2 vocabulary—those rich, versatile words that appear across subjects—that truly elevate our students’ language. These words help them express themselves with precision, understand complex texts, and engage more deeply with their learning.
That’s why all our teachers are committed to the explicit teaching of Tier 2 vocabulary across the curriculum. It’s a whole-school priority to ensure every student has the tools they need to thrive.
Myton students in Years 7 and 8 are fortunate to use Bedrock Vocabulary in their LRC lessons and for weekly homework. This fantastic programme is designed to broaden vocabulary and deepen understanding. Bedrock has compiled a list of 400 high-impact Tier 2 words that can make a real difference to students’ language development. We encourage you to take a look at the list—print it out and stick it on the fridge! Ask your child how many of these words they know and use. Together, we can help our young people read, speak, and write like scholars.
