Students and staff members from the Kunst-und Musikschule der Stadt Brühl arrived at Myton School this week as part of our longstanding German-Music exchange.
Students were hosted by the families of Myton students who had visiting Brühl last Easter, who kindly opened their homes to a German visitor for 5 days. It was lovely to see the students greeting each other as they got off the coach, many of them having kept in touch and become firm friends in the intervening months.
After spending a day with their families (enjoying a range of activities as diverse as visiting London and watching a local amateur football match), the German students came to school on Monday morning to experience life in a British school. An ice breaker workshop of singing games culminating in a group performance of Shape of You was led by Ms Harrisson in period 1 before students visited lessons with their Myton host. The afternoon was spent rehearsing for the joint evening concert which was a celebration of musical talent at both schools. There was a huge variety of performances, from a joint orchestra and chamber music groups and soloists from Germany and Myton to a joint pop performance put together on the day and an impressive finale by Year 11 and post-16 rock bands. One of the highlights has to be Myton’s own Year 9 Harvey performing an Abba mash up which included staff and students from both school getting up on stage to Dancing Queen and performing the conga around the audience! The concert was followed by a party with food and drink provided by Myton families.
On Tuesday, the German students visited Warwick Castle with their Myton hosts, with only a slight interruption due to a fire alarm and evacuation for ten minutes! We enjoyed watching the incredible falconry show and trebuchet demonstration while students cemented friendships made in previous trips.
After a final evening with their host families, we said farewell to our German friends on Wednesday morning after another memorable visit. We look forward to seeing them again when we visit Germany in October 2026.
Thank you to all the Myton parents and staff who made this trip possible, including Ms Cheung (Music), Mr Caves (MFL), the team in Finance and HR (responsible for processing all the DBS checks for our host families), staff hosts Ms Millington and Ms Agar and Leamington International Twinning Society members Mr and Mrs Stevens, as well as our German colleagues. Hopefully the exchange will continue for years to come and many more students will have the opportunity to enjoy this unique experience.
Some comments from Myton students who took part and their families:
“We enjoyed showing our visitors the local area”
“It was nice to have them stay with us and get to know them”
“Really nice to see how supportive the two schools were of one another at the concert”
Wendy Harrisson (Head of Music and Brühl exchange organiser)
