It was great to see so many of you at our Open Evening last night. It was a fantastic evening, and we were proud to showcase our school. There were fun activities going on in all departments, including cupcake decorating, giant doodling, never-ending story writing, giant scrabble and many more. A big thank you to all our students who volunteered as tour guides for the evening, to our staff and to all our visitors. Below are just a few of the photos from last night.

Dear Parents and Carers

Our pastoral curriculum theme this week has been democracy and it has been my turn to deliver assemblies on this topic. Assemblies have to be short to fit into tutor time so when planning them we have to be somewhat selective in what we focus on. One of the areas I wanted to unpack with the students was the extent to which they understood that there is legislation planned to reduce the voting age to 16 and whether they intended to exercise that right to vote. 

Depressingly very few seemed enthused with the idea of voting despite my two-pronged attack of how many people have fought and died to bring power to the people in this country and how the only way of ensuring elected politicians listen to younger voters is to actually vote. Of course we will keep working on them about their responsibility to vote and engage in debate and all other aspects of democracy as the year goes on.

Dear Parents and Carers

Preparations are now underway in school for our Open Evening, which is taking place on Thursday 25 September, 5-8pm, with Head Teacher talks at 5.15pm, 6pm and 6.45pm. It’s a great opportunity for prospective pupils and their families to come and have a look around the school, meet current students (who do a wonderful job of being tour guides), and our exceptional departments and teachers. We look forward to seeing you there (no need to book, just turn up).

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome back to your children, it’s been nice to see them again and settle them back into school life. Thanks to them all, and you, for making such a positive start…they look great and are responding to our high expectations very well. Our new Year 7s are lovely, running around and getting lost but getting stuck into everything which is how it should be. It’s always nice to meet the Year 7 parents on the gate and watch as they try and hug their kids goodbye at the start of the day only for the child to bolt into school, completely ignoring their mum or dad because all parents are, of course, embarrassing.    

I’d like to welcome all the parents of our new Year 12s this year. We know most of you of course but this year around 40% of our Year 12 are new to Myton and are making a great first impression over this week. It’s a record number of Year 12s for us and a sign of our flourishing success at Key Stage 5.

Dear Parents and Carers

As we draw the curtain over another academic year at Myton, it is time to bid a fond farewell to colleagues who are moving on. There are a handful this year but I’d like to take a bit of time to say goodbye to Mark Sykes, our longest serving member of staff, who is retiring this year. It’s difficult to be precise about Mark’s career at Myton as he started here in an era which pre-dated most technology we rely on, but according to the parchments we dug out I believe he started at Myton sometime around the last Great Reform Act. He has fulfilled many roles here over the years but has spent the last few happily teaching Politics to our A level students, inspiring many into a career in the subject. It is notable that whenever we visit Parliament there are some of Mark’s ex students working there who come and see us and talk to the kids, this includes one ex student who was working in Number 10 until very recently.

Dear Parents and Carers

School has been bustling this week as we’ve welcomed back both our Year 11s, together with a large number of students from other schools, for our Sixth Form Taster Day, and next year’s Year 7s for their transition day into secondary school. They’ve had the chance to meet other students, get to know their form tutors and experience a range of taster lessons. We hope everyone found the experience useful and we look forward to seeing them all in September. Thank you to everyone who helped make the events a success, including our student volunteers who provided invaluable support throughout.

In other news, we have a new addition to our menagerie of animals cared for by TA Linda Jones and students in the animal club. He’s a Pacman frog – called so, because of their round shape and large mouths. And the students have chosen to call him ‘Perry’. Thanks kids.

Dear Parents and Carers

There are only three weeks left now until the end of the academic year and things continue to be busy here at Myton. On Wednesday next week we welcome our new cohort of Year 7 students who visit us for their Transition Day – an opportunity to meet teachers, other students and experience taster lessons. Then, on Thursday, those students starting in our Sixth Form from September will join us to sample some A level lessons and meet fellow students and teachers. Going full circle, as we welcome new students we also have our farewell events for those students leaving us, with our Year 13 prom taking place next week, and the Year 11 prom the week after. These are always special events and we hope this year will be no exception.

It was a very hot Sports Day yesterday, but despite the heat we saw some great performances, personal bests and school records broken. Well done to record breakers Zachary (Year 7) in the shot put and Luke (Year 7), Aditi (Year 8) and Chloe (Year 10) in the javelin (the Year 7 javelin record had stood since 2007!).

Thank you to all our students who supported or competed at the event, the staff who helped run the day, the families who came to watch, and our Sixth Form Student Leadership team who ran the tuck shop stall.
