Myton School proudly hosted a vibrant and inspiring event this week, Celebrating Being Black and British, in recognition of Black History Month. The afternoon brought together over 70 pupils from Years 7 to 11, who engaged in a joyful celebration of culture, creativity, and community. This was after a host of assemblies led by Kieran Joseph (CEO of Guardian Ballers) for Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 about Black History Month and unpacking the theme of ‘Standing Firm in Power and Pride’.
The event was delivered in partnership with Guardian Ballers, a values-driven organisation committed to promoting wellbeing, resilience, and positive relationships through sport and mentoring. Pupils chose between two exciting workshops:
- Multi-Sports & Basketball Workshop: Led by Kieran Joseph and the Guardian Ballers team, this high-energy session included basketball and dodgeball activities in the Dave Walker Gym. Pupils had the chance to build teamwork, confidence and have fun through sport.
- Performing Arts & Vocal Workshop: The talented Corah Fowles led a powerful creative session, encouraging pupils to explore self-expression through voice and performance. Her workshop inspired reflection and creativity, culminating in a moving live performance during the shared celebration.
To close the afternoon, all participants came together to enjoy a delicious spread of Caribbean and African food, provided by CateredbyRuva. The shared meal was accompanied by a performance from Corah, Joshua from Coventry MIND and a Q&A session with both Corah and Kieran, offering pupils a chance to engage in meaningful dialogue and celebrate diversity.
The event was a joyful and memorable experience, highlighting the richness of Black British culture and the power of community. We are incredibly proud of all the pupils who took part and grateful to our partners for making the celebration so special.
