A Warwick District Council reward scheme to encourage people aged 14 and upwards to travel using alternatives to the car has been adopted by Myton School. Called ‘BetterPoints‘ it uses an app to track journeys taken by walking and cycling, as well as those made by bus and train in the area. BetterPoints rewards are then added which can be redeemed for shopping vouchers or donated to local charities.
Year 13 student and Head of Senate, Ollie, and Mr Apostol have been working on developing the scheme to encourage students to make their journeys to school by active travel or public transport, promoting cleaner air along Myton Road and reducing our environmental impact.
“I am involved with the Sixth Form Senate Environment Committee at school and Clean Air Warwickshire and we’re always looking at ways to get the community involved in initiatives which can have a very real and positive impact for everyone,” said Ollie (pictured above right with Mr Apostol on the Myton Road).
“For the many students who already travel to school by bus, bike or on foot, this is a no-brainer, it is great to be rewarded for something you already do. I’ve actually earned around £50 worth of points!”
The scheme works for all journeys across Warwick District and means that Parents and Carers can still benefit during their journeys to work or into town centres for shopping. Those with students aged 13 and under can also install the app for themselves so they don’t miss out!

The scheme is now active – the app is free to install and just requires a smartphone with location tracking. Ollie has produced a ‘how to’ guide which details how the first 50 people to register from Myton will be eligible for an additional 150 BetterPoints bonus! Please remember to input the unique Myton School referral code ‘MSCHYMW‘ when registering so that signups can be tracked.
Reduced price bus fares
Another way to get the BetterPoints rolling in is to take advantage of reduced price fares on buses between Warwick Gates and Leamington: under 19s pay £1 single fare and families pay £5 return fare, during weekends and school holidays until the start of the summer.
