As we enter the winter months, we know that colds, coughs, and other seasonal illnesses can become more common. The Department for Education has shared some useful reminders to help families keep children well and learning.
1. When your child is well enough for school
Most mild illnesses – such as a runny nose, sore throat, or slight cough – don’t require time off school. The main reason to stay home is if your child has a temperature or is too unwell to take part in lessons.
You can find clear NHS guidance here.
2. Medical appointments
Please try to book medical or dental appointments outside school hours where possible. If not, children should attend school before and after their appointment if they are well enough.
3. Vaccinations
Flu vaccinations are being offered to all school-age children this term. Please return consent forms promptly and speak to your GP or school nurse if you have any questions. Catch-up clinics are available if your child misses their appointment.
4. Handwashing and hygiene
Encourage your child to wash their hands regularly, especially:
- Before eating
- After the toilet
- After coughing, sneezing, or playing outside
We should continue to promote the ‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’ message to help prevent the spread of germs.
5. Fresh air and ventilation
Classrooms may be slightly cooler at times to allow for good ventilation. Layered clothing can help keep children comfortable.
6. Good routines make a difference
Healthy sleep, balanced meals, and regular attendance all support your child’s wellbeing, confidence, and learning.
Thank you for working with us to keep our school community healthy and learning through the autumn/winter season.
