Dear Parents and Carers
With just one week left of the academic year, many schools might be starting to wind down. At Myton, however, we seem determined to squeeze every last drop out of the term! Even as temperatures rise and many of us are dreaming of sitting quietly in front of a fan with an ice-cold drink, our students continue to embrace an incredible range of opportunities beyond the classroom.
This week alone, our Year 12 students have been exploring environmental issues at Osmington Bay, our Year 10 students have enjoyed their well-earned trip to Alton Towers, and our Year 8 students have been making memories in Barcelona, experiencing a different culture and developing their independence and confidence along the way.
Closer to home, students have been taking part in School Council training, developing their leadership skills and ensuring that student voice remains at the heart of our school community. We have also been delighted to welcome our incoming Year 6 students for their transition day, giving them a first taste of life at Myton and helping them feel excited and confident about joining us in September.
As interim Head Teacher, I am immensely proud of the breadth of experiences we offer our students. However, as a parent of two school-aged children myself, I often find that when I ask them about their day, it isn’t usually the lessons they talk about first. It’s the trips, the performances, the competitions, the visits, the residentials and the opportunities to spend time with friends whilst learning something new. These are often the moments that stay with them long after they have left school.
That is why enrichment matters so much. Education is not simply about what happens in a classroom; it is about helping young people discover who they are, what they enjoy and what they are capable of achieving. Whether students are tackling environmental challenges on the Dorset coast, practising leadership skills, navigating a city abroad, or simply taking the first exciting steps of their secondary school journey, they are developing the resilience, confidence and independence that will serve them throughout their lives. While I know the learning is essential, it is often these memorable opportunities that build confidence, develop character, create friendships and inspire future ambitions. They are the stories that are retold around the dinner table and remembered years later.
So, whilst the heat may be encouraging the adults among us to move a little more slowly and dream of standing inside a supermarket’s refrigerated aisle, our students continue to impress us with their energy and enthusiasm. Long may it continue for one final week!
Thank you to all the staff who have worked tirelessly to organise and support these opportunities, and to our students for embracing every experience with such positivity and maturity.
Have a wonderful weekend and let’s make the most of our final week together before the summer break.
Kind Regards
Mrs Curtis
