Dear Parents and Carers
The Myton Unity Project put on the Canvas of Culture event last night and it was a triumph. This was organised and led by students in Year 12 who, in their Business Studies class, decided that they wanted to put their learning into practice by arranging an evening to celebrate the cultural diversity of Myton and our community. Their planning involved contacting local businesses and arranging for them to attend, seeking support from the Gurdwara Sahib in Leamington, who very kindly sponsored the whole event, inviting our upcoming Year 6s and their families, designing workshops that would celebrate the rich diversity of our school and community and arranging a talent show. They pitched the ideas to the Leadership Team and we felt that this was exactly the type of event we needed more of and gave them our full approval. Students were supported by Mrs Bhatoe, and they delivered a fantastic feel good event which started with the talent show, demonstrating the range of talents our students have in music, dance, Bhangra drumming, boxing and comedy. The impressions of staff went down well though I am still mystified as to who was being depicted as a rather glum, rotund fellow with a litter pick, I’ll keep an eye out.
Following this we had workshops, which included Bhangra and African dance, henna, a celebration of British summer and a Cantonese workshop. In between, people visited the stalls of local businesses and treated themselves to some food. The atmosphere was fantastic, everyone enjoyed themselves and we certainly see this as an event which could eventually develop from a few hundred attending to a few thousand.
The students who planned and delivered this event (Rian, Lillie, Skye, Rayna, Alex, Arjun, Andrew, Toby, Sahib, Arshdeep, Adelaide and other Sixth Form volunteers) deserve so much praise, they have certainly put into practice their learning in Business, but in doing so have set Myton towards ever better community relationships. Mrs Bhatoe has led these students brilliantly and worked very hard to ensure the success of this event. And finally, I would like to thank our friends Councillor Parminder Birdi and Myjinder Singh and Bhupinder Singh from the Leamington and Warwick Sikh Temple – Gurdwara Sahib for supporting the evening and making it possible.
Best wishes
