Dear Parents and Carers
Firstly, thanks to all those who have helped with fundraising events for Children in Need this week (I very much enjoyed the doughnut sale) which, when combined with the non-uniform today, should raise a good sum of money for the charity.
These events are an important part of students learning about the world around them and are one of the key themes addressed in tutor times and tutor freezes, eg the recent freeze on COP26 planned by sixth formers. In Years 12 and 13 students take part in our scheme of compulsory volunteering (a title I dearly love), where they complete a set number of volunteer hours to help their community; sometimes within Myton supporting in classes or events, but often in local primary schools where they attended years before.
The last two years halted most of the outside the classroom learning plans we had for students but this provides us with an opportunity to review and relaunch. We had a planning meeting for this on Wednesday with the key question of “what do we want to achieve by the end of Year 11?” Not in terms of grades but in terms of character. This allowed us to map these characteristics through the school so we have a clear idea of what we need to achieve from Year 7 and even how we can work with primaries to look at Year 6.
My belief is that once these plans are in place they will be the most important thing we (school and parents) can do with our students. Understanding the world around them was only one of the themes we will be mapping through the years, others included contextual behaviour and students taking control of their own futures by seeking answers and opportunities. These will all be shared over the next few months as plans turn into actions but for the time being I would say it was the most motivating and optimistic bit of post Covid planning so far.
Best wishes
