Our Maths in Motion Club entered a Christmas Challenge race recently, competing with student teams from across the country. Using internet based software from JLR, teams had to program a Formula 1 car to race around the Nürburgring track 67 times and, just like in Formula 1, they needed to keep a close eye on changing weather conditions and set up a pit stop strategy.
The group were placed seventh on the grid after qualifying. In the race itself they set the fastest lap of all cars, on lap 20, going round in 88.120 seconds, and rose to second place in the race for much of the time. Our pit stop strategy was perhaps not as slick as other teams, as we slipped back later in the race to finish in a very respectable seventh place; not bad for our first ever competitive race. Well done to team mates: Sam Beckett, Cameron Davies, James Holt, Maks Nowak and Jaydan Williams.
The team will be back competing in the next challenge race and will also be taking part in the World Championships later in the year. Any Year 7 & 8 students who think they might be interested in joining the club, please feel free to drop in to C6, every Thursday after school from 3.10-4.30pm and give it a go.
