Dear Parents & Carers
An election – how exciting! Or at least in this seat of Warwick and Leamington it is. In 2017, it was won by Labour with a slim majority of just over 1,200 votes. Prior to this, it was a Conservative seat in the 2015 and 2010 elections, with majorities of 6,500 and 3,500 votes respectively. The three elections between 1997 and 2005 all saw Labour winning the seat. In short, this constituency matters. So far, four candidates have declared: Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats and the Greens, and the Brexit Party are promising to unveil their candidate before the deadline of November 14.
During previous elections, Myton has hosted hustings between the candidates, chaired by Mr Sykes with the audience made up of Year 13 students (many of whom are 18 and eligible to vote). This year we want to try something different. Firstly, we would like all year groups represented in the audience to ask their questions. One feature of our ’50 things to do before you leave Myton’ is challenging elected officials and this is an ideal opportunity. Secondly, we would like to live stream the event to all our parents and hopefully beyond. With 1667 students, our parental body is huge and large enough to swing this seat one way or another. If wider family and friends tune in too, even more voters could be helped to make up their minds.
Our tech team here is busy making sure we have the right kit to achieve this but they are confident. Therefore, we will be contacting candidates to invite them to this event where they can be grilled by our very politically aware students with unseen questions and their responses can be streamed to thousands of voters. I hope they all accept our invitation.
With best wishes
Andy Perry – Head Teacher
