Dear Parents and Carers
When you walk into Myton School, you enter a community of 1600 students and over 200 members of staff. It is a fantastic community in which to work and study, reflecting the rich diversity of Warwick and Leamington.
In conversations with our students, we can learn about Sikhism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam and several other religions. We can discover what it is like growing up here in the local area, as well as any number of other areas in the UK, and further afield in Europe and Asia, in America, India, Iraq and Syria to name a few. Statistics would suggest that we have over 100 LGBT people in school. We currently have over 50 children diagnosed with either Asperger’s or Autism. We also have students with a range of learning needs and/or disabilities, including cerebral palsy, dyslexia and hearing and visual impairments. In this rich and varied diversity we proudly reflect our community and learn from each other.
As we review our School Improvement Plan following the Ofsted inspection, we ask ourselves whether we do enough to celebrate our diversity and provide opportunities for students to learn from each other about their varied and fascinating backgrounds and experiences. The answer currently is no.
I know that our students are respectful and interested in each other. However, I also know that we need to do more to embed genuine understanding and tolerance, give the students more opportunities to discuss and debate important topics, and give them a voice through which they can express themselves. We will begin to implement some of our new strategies and ideas after Easter and it is a piece of work that I am excited to be part of. In the meantime, I would like to thank all the students and parents who have taken the time to discuss with me and my colleagues their experiences of life at Myton. These conversations have informed our ideas and will make a great difference.
Best wishes
Andy Perry – Head Teacher
