My Child Has Special Needs or a Barrier to Learning – What Does Myton School Do?

Students are invited and welcome to attend every meeting that concerns them. They are a significant part of everything that is decided and agreed.

If your Child was on the Special needs register at Primary School

We carry out visits to your child’s primary school and meet their Special Needs Coordinator (SENCo). Parents can also arrange visits for children with an Education, Health Care Plan to the school before the Induction Day in the summer term. We gather the relevant information and share it with all the staff at Myton School using our specialist database.

There are then two options:

1. SEN ‘K’ Support – Wave 1, 2 or 3
2. Statement or Education, Health Care Plan (EHCP)

SEN ‘K’ Support – Wave 1

Wave 1 provides universal, inclusive support for everyone with Quality First teaching:

• We contact you to discuss short-term support to help your child settle into their new school and offer a meeting in school.
• Twice a month we monitor progress at Student Action Meetings.

If your child makes sufficient progress:

• We arrange a meeting with you where we agree to monitor and support your child to maintain and accelerate their progress.
• If your child’s progress & work remain on track we arrange another meeting with you where we come to a joint agreement that your child is taken off the Needs Analysis list.
• We use regular normal school reports to monitor your child’s progress.

SEN ‘K’ Support – Wave 2

Wave 2 provides additional targeted interventions to enable your child to work at age-related expectations or above:

• We will consider adding your child to our ‘Friday’s Child’ programme where teachers and staff from the Development Centre meet weekly to discuss how best to support your child.
• We act on the advice from the professional outside agency and review it over a specific period of time.
• We identify a key worker who is your single point of contact.
• We hold regular CAF (Common Assessment Framework) meetings with you and your key worker.
• We create a ‘provision map’ based on: assess > plan > do > review, and share it with you and staff at Myton School using our specialist database. (‘Assess > plan > do > review’ means we identify the core barrier(s)/need(s)/problem(s) and plan an intervention strategy to improve them, taking into account how the child learns best. We then implement the plan and following an agreed timescale, review it, continue it, adapt it, or change it completely.)
• We will make sure there is regular communication between you and your child’s key worker.

• We arrange a meeting with you to see if your child can move down a ‘wave’.
• We use regular normal school reports to monitor your child’s progress.

SEN ‘K’ Support – Wave 3

Wave 3 provides additional intensive highly-personalised interventions:

We hold a meeting with all the relevant professionals involved, then:

• We consider applying for an Education, Health Care Plan (EHCP). This plan identifies your child’s needs and sets out the additional support they need.
• We look at exam access arrangements so that future applications to the exam bodies have a chance of being successful near external GCSE & A Level exam time.

If your child makes sufficient progress:

• We arrange a meeting with you to see if your child can move down a ‘wave’.
• We use regular normal school reports to monitor your child’s progress.

Statement or Education, Health Care Plan

• We arrange meetings in school with you and staff from the Development Centre.
• If necessary, we arrange meetings with external professionals or outside agencies, for example Educational Psychologists or the Integrated Support Service for Autism/Physical Disability.
• We carry out annual reviews and work with Warwickshire County Council Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Department (SENDAR).

If your Child wasn’t on the Special needs register at Primary School

If you are concerned about an aspect of your child’s learning, development or attendance you can contact us at any time to discuss it. We will then do the following:

• Gather evidence from all subject teachers and teaching assistants about your child’s academic, social, health & emotional well-being.
• Arrange meetings in school to discuss what short-term support we can offer. This support follows the pattern: assess > plan > do > review.
• We gather the relevant information and share it with all the staff at Myton School using our specialist database.
• We identify a key worker who is your single point of contact.
• Twice a month we monitor progress at Student Action Meetings and your key worker will keep in regular contact with you by phone, email, letter or with face-to-face meetings.
• Your child’s key worker monitors their progress. This includes their academic progress, their social, physical & emotional well-being, and their attendance. We share with you and school staff any evidence of how our support and strategies are working.

• We use the regular school reports to monitor your child’s progress.

If your child doesn’t make sufficient progress [see below]

If your child doesn’t make sufficient progress

If your child is not progressing with the additional support offered, or they need extra or different help from the majority of students, we will consider doing some or all of the following:

• We will request advice from a professional outside agency, for example Educational Psychologists or the Integrated Support Service for Autism/Physical Disability.
• We might offer you a CAF (Common Assessment Framework) family support meeting. (A CAF meeting brings together education, health and/or social services professionals who work together to focus on the needs of all members of the family.)
• We might place your child at SEN ‘K’ – Wave 2 on our school Needs Analysis list.

If learning barriers persist despite all the support and provisions put in place we will hold a meeting with all the relevant professionals involved and:

• Consider placing your child at SEN ‘K’ – Wave 3 on our school Needs Analysis list.

If necessary, we will then write an Education, Health Care Plan and submit it for consideration to Warwickshire County Council Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Department.
