Teacher Training at Myton School

Do you want to train ‘on the job’? Come to Myton and join the School Direct Programme where you will be fully immersed in school life from day one. We are a dedicated and supportive team, able to assist from application to NQT year and beyond.

Why Myton School?

Myton School is committed to recruiting and training enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about becoming outstanding teachers. We take trainees from a number of different providers but enjoy a particularly close relationship with our strategic partners, the University of Warwick. Our Initial Teacher Training provision was identified as ‘outstanding’ by Warwick University in 2017.

During your training you will have specialist help from our professional and subject mentors and develop your practical skills in the classroom whilst gaining a theoretical understanding. At the end of your training you will be awarded Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and designated a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT). You will be awarded a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and in some case, 60 Masters credits.

The training route

Trainees are not paid but are eligible for the same funding as university trainees.

Places are available at Myton School in the following subjects for the academic year 2019-20:

  • Science, Maths, English
  • English
  • History
  • Geography
  • MFL (German with French. Spanish with French)
  • Computer Science

There will be a placement in a complementary school in the first half of the spring term. There may be additional bursaries – find out more on the Get Into Teaching website.

Can I visit the school before I begin my application?

We encourage people to gain experience of mainstream UK schools to become familiar with the atmosphere and demands of the age phase they are applying for. You can do this by using the School Experience programme. You will be able to observe lessons in the curriculum area in which you wish to teach.  Please apply via the Get Into Teaching website.

Who is eligible?

  • You have graduated, or are about to graduate from a British university or College of Higher Eduction with a 2:1 or higher, if applying for English, history or drama, and a 2:2 or higher for other subjects. A significant proportion of your degree must be in your chosen subject.
  • You should have at least a grade C in GCSE English and mathematics, or equivalent.
  • If you studied outside the UK, please visit the National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC) to find out whether your qualifications are of an equivalent level to UK GCSEs, A levels and an undergraduate degree.
  • In addition, all candidates are required to have passed the literacy and numeracy tests before starting teacher training. You can book these tests and access practice materials on the DfE website.

Information for International Students

If you’re an international student you may need to check with a University International Office who can advise on whether you have the necessary Visa permissions to study with us. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept students onto School Direct programmes who hold a Tier 4 Visa.

Visit the UCAS website. Look for 2KR President Kennedy Teaching School Alliance.

Click on the ‘Apply and Track’ tab, which is underneath the ‘Teacher Training’ tab.

Click ‘start your application’.

Please include information on:

  • Why you want to teach and work with young people.
  • Details of how your degree content relates to the curriculum area you want to teach.
  • The experience you have had in school and how you have reflected upon it? Please apply this to the school you are applying to and put it in their context.
  • Other relevant experience that highlight your skills.
  • Any personal strengths you have that will support you in teaching? Underpin these with examples.
  • Why the School Direct route is of interest to you.
  • How you will contribute to the school.

Interview

If your application is successful, we will invite you for interview with the Initial Teacher Training team at Myton School. The interview process will comprise of an interview with a member of the relevant department, plus a 30-minute lesson with a chosen class. You will be sent topic/class details beforehand. There will also be a number of documents to be checked and forms to be completed.

You will normally be told if you have been successful within 24 hours. The process is similar for both salaried and non-salaried places. You will then be invited to join the new staff induction day and spend time with your department and new colleagues.
