Key Stage 3

Year 7

All students learn Spanish throughout Year 7. We cover:

  • Autumn term – Phonics, alphabet, classroom talk, where you live, to be, to speak, talking about languages, Christmas
  • Spring term – Animals, colours, eyes/height, shapes
  • Summer term – Family, future tense

Year 8

In Year 8, the students in set 1 will study either German or French in addition to Spanish. Sets 2 and 3 are continuing with Spanish only.

In Spanish, we cover

  • Autumn term – Revision, the local area (including the future tense)
  • Spring term – Holidays (including the future and conditional tenses)
  • Summer term – Hobbies and pastimes (including the perfect tense), identity, personality, relationships, interests

Students studying two languages in Year 8 cover all the above except for holidays.

In German, we cover

  • Autumn term – The basics, descriptions, colours, countries, classroom talk, families
  • Spring term – Hobbies and free time, questions and opinions, music, school, buildings
  • Summer term – In town, the tourist office, jobs and money, time

In French, we cover

  • Autumn term – The basics, age, objects, classroom talk, school, opinions
  • Spring term – Family, describing people, daily routine, where you live
  • Summer term – Hobbies and free time, around town (including the future tense)

Year 9

In Year 9, students will continue to study a language. Students who have only studied Spanish will continue with this whilst those who have studied French or German in Year 8 may choose to continue with this language instead. Some students opt to continue with two languages.

In Spanish, we cover

  • Autumn term – Technology, films and musical habits
  • Spring term – Daily routine, the environment
  • Summer term – Verbs and tenses, laying the foundations for GCSE study, extended projects

In German, we cover

  • Autumn term – Holidays, culture and festivals
  • Spring term – Home town and region, charity work
  • Summer term – Verbs and tenses, laying the foundations for GCSE study, extended projects

In French, we cover

  • Autumn term – Holidays, culture and festivals
  • Spring term – Home town and region, charity work
  • Summer term – Verbs and tenses, laying the foundations for GCSE study, extended projects

Key Stage 4

Students can opt to study one or two GCSE courses in Spanish, German, French or Italian. Students will start Italian at beginner level and, depending on the number of students, they may have the option to choose French and/or German at beginner level. In Year 9 we do some consolidation work on core grammar and vocabulary and then start the courses which cover:

Identity and culture

  • family and friends
  • leisure activities
  • daily routines

Local, national, international

  • festivals and events
  • charity-related activities
  • features of a town or region

Study and employment

  • school and beyond
  • work and work experience
  • world of work, eg job interview, applications, etc

Assessment at GCSE

There is no coursework and the overall grade will be made up of a set of exams at the end of the course. You will be examined on listening, speaking, reading and writing, each of which make up 25% of your overall mark.

  • Foundation allows a student to gain grades 5 – 1
  • Higher allows a student to gain grades 9 – 4
