On Monday, twenty Sixth Form politics students visited Westminster to gain a valuable insight into how Parliament operates. The day began with a guided tour around Parliament – starting with the Great Hall (which was the oldest part of the Palace, dating back to the 1300’s) and ended with a visit to both chambers. While in the Commons the group met (by chance) James Fisk, who left Myton three years ago and now works for a very senior Conservative MP. Following lunch, the students watched the Education Secretary Nadim Zahawi answer education questions in the Commons, during which Matt Western took the opportunity to welcome Myton students who were in the Public Gallery; a mention which will now be included in Hansard, the permanent written record of the debates held in the Commons Chamber.
At the end of the day students met their local Labour MP (Matt Western) for a Q & A session, plus talking with Matt’s Parliamentary Researcher Jonny Rutherford, who is an ex-student from Myton. They also had the chance to meet Richard Keen (Myton 2010) who is now a senior manager in the Commons Library. Both Jonny and Richard shared their journey from Myton Sixth Form to the Palace of Westminster and the thrills and spills of working in such an exciting environment.
There is no doubt that all the students gained an increased level of understanding and appreciation for the ‘Mother of all Parliaments’, with the added bonus of meeting three ‘old’ Mytonians whose place of work is now The Palace of Westminster!
