Myton’s Religion, Ethics and Philosophy (REP) Department is the recipient of a prestigious £1,000 grant towards encouraging excellence in religious education.
The grant was one of ten awarded by the Culham St Gabriel’s Trust, an independent endowed charity, to mark its 10 year anniversary and was announced at the recent RExChange Conference.
According to Miss Jones, Head of REP, the prize money means the school can recognise and celebrate the diverse culture it has: “I made the online application at the end of last academic term as I wanted to be able to set up Bhangra classes at Myton through a school scheme that also teaches pupils Punjabi. Within REP this year we are focusing on promoting learning about world religions and global culture.”
“I am hoping to be able to have a day of culture within Myton and then a Vaisakhi celebration in the evening, recognising our significant Sikh population. This will be planned and confirmed in due course.”
Culham St Gabriel’s Trust received a high number of applications and trustees had some very difficult decisions to make. The Myton School proposal was one of a handful which stood out for its innovation and creativity. In accepting the award there are terms and conditions which mean that staff, students and parent & carer research work must be undertaken beforehand then the celebrations must be completed with a review afterwards to judge the impact.
“As we go through the process I will update the school website with pictures of the events we hold. I am very much looking forward to working alongside staff, students and parents & carers to see what we can produce and focus on positive community cohesion. It is very exciting!” Miss Jones added.
