As you probably know, over the past 18 months, we have unfortunately had to cancel lots of events, including once-in-a-lifetime trips to far flung places and the Year 11 and 13 leavers’ events for both 2020 and 2021, which are such a focal point for our students, marking the culmination of their hard work and a celebration of their time with us. But there is light at the end of the tunnel and we are determined to ensure that the enrichment opportunities that nourish us all are not completely lost.
Thankfully, we’ve recently been able to welcome back guests and visitors into school to provide out-of-the-classroom experiences. We’ve had to make adaptations to reduce risks from Covid, but within the last few weeks, we have hosted a British Military Team Building and Self Development Course, the Zoolab experience, and we’ve also got a roller disco planned for next week.
I’m also pleased that we’ve been able to re-start some of our out-of-school experiences. We’ve had the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze expedition, a local event for our Year 9 Film Studies students, and next week our Year 10 and 12 geographers are out on fieldwork trips.
Last summer’s Year 9 Newquay trip was sadly postponed, but we were determined those students should not miss out and I am delighted that we have now had two trips return with a third out this weekend. Our Year 9s have now had the full ‘Newquay experience’ and our Year 10s, because of the dedication of those staff who simply would not take no for an answer, are able to create those memories this weekend and next.
As someone who has attended many trips over the years (the photo above was taken in Iceland), and witnessed first-hand the personal growth of our students through these experiences, I know and value the benefits of what can be learned outside the classroom. It is why I am such a passionate advocate for a programme that complements the classroom-based learning we offer day in and day out. We were working on the ‘Myton Promise’ in late 2019, which outlines the extra curricular activities your children can expect to experience during their time at Myton. For obvious reasons, this has been delayed, but when we are able to share it with you, it will be a bigger and better ‘Myton Promise’ than ever.
With best wishes
Simon Jones – Deputy Head
