This week we were joined by representatives from CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) to plant some hedgerows around site. This formed part of CPRE’s ‘Hedgerow Heroes’ project, which is planting a kilometer of native hedgerows around Warwickshire. Our Year 7’s were tasked with creating the design, and our 10 finalists, along with their friends, all had an opportunity to help with the planting of over 850 hedgerows. Volunteers from the Sixth Form were on hand to handle the tasks that needed a bit more brute strength, and all were expertly guided by the good folk from CPRE. On the last day of planting we were joined by local MP Matt Western who, along with winning designer – Elisa – planted the last piece of hedge.
The winning design depicts the world, as a representation of all of the communities that come together to make Myton what it is. It will take 4 or 5 years for the hedges to reach maturity, so the Year 7s will be able to watch it grow as they progress through Myton; seeing it reach its maturity as they too grow and mature with us. When fully grown, the design will provide two peaceful areas for children to sit during break and lunch and attract a variety of bugs and insects.
It’s been fantastic to see all the pupils fully engage with this opportunity and be wonderful ambassadors for Myton. The volunteers from CPRE have been full of praise for the children’s politeness, energy and commitment. With any luck we might have encouraged a few of them to spend a little less time indoors and a little more time enjoying all that nature has to offer.
