On Tuesday 3 May Year 8 Geography students were invited to take part in an interactive workshop looking at the geological timeline of the Earth.
The workshop was led by an outside agency, who presented to 150 students over the course of the day. The children were really engaged and inspired by the session, which was designed to enhance and develop topics they had already studied as part of their Key Stage 3 curriculum. Links were made between their topic of tectonics, and how the structure of the earth altered the continents as we know them today. The session looked at the role of atmosphere and how water has shaped landscapes which linked with studies on weather and climate. Finally, the children explored how animals evolved, and the impact humans may have had on this, which supports their topic of environmental concerns. It also provided a fantastic springboard to the Year 9 topic of climate change as it made everyone question the extent to which humans shape the natural processes which have taken place on Earth’s timeline.
Head of Geography, Mrs Wood, and teacher, Ms Seymour, were proud to be involved in the event because the Year 8 children “represented the ethos and values of Myton school.”
The Geography department looks forward to running the workshop again next year.
