As we enter this next phase of lockdown, we’re keen to celebrate the incredible work done by students across the school. Each week, three departments will nominate those students whose work their teachers feel should be shared and celebrated. We’ll be sending electronic postcards home for these students and will share their work in our weekly newsletter and on our website. We will also be awarding the occasional Head Teacher’s Award for exceptional work and any student receiving one of these will receive a call from Mr Perry or one of the Deputy Head Teachers.
This week, we asked our Art, Photography and History departments to celebrate the work done by their students.
Art
Year 7
Mrs Thomson has nominated her whole class: “I am so impressed with 7X1 who have worked really hard at home on their self identity portraits.”
Year 8
Mr Meredith chose Beth P and Matilda H: “Because they have produced outstanding work for all art set tasks. This was especially true of their caricature pieces which are so hard to do. They are amazing bits of art that had huge character and skill.”
Mrs Thompson chose Freya T because of her “Fantastic response to every task set, excellent quality of work and she took the time to email me to say she’d really been enjoying the work set online!”
Year 9
Mr Green chose Ali K for her ‘Fragmented Face’ project: “Really conscientious student. Great at submitting work. Very enthusiastic and independent.”
Year 10
Mr Meredith chose Felicia W, Ciana H and Abi S because: “After lockdown they all continued to work independently on their mock exam final pieces. Without any physical help they produced the most amazing and personal responses linking to a chosen theme. So proud of them and all the Year 10 submissions.”
Mr Green chose Martha B for her mock exam piece: “Highly independent, intelligent approach to art. A piece of work that takes on greater significance considering our present situation.”
Year 11
Mr Meredith said: “Jacob W produced 100 portraits in 10 days and the results were mind blowing. An utterly outstanding student who deserves high praise indeed. This is a demonstration of what can be achieved with skill, determination and talent. Love it!”
Here’s why Mr Meredith chose Izzy O-W (who has also won a Head Teacher’s Award): “An amazing and personal piece of art work demonstrating incredible passion and determination under very difficult circumstances. Izzy completed the task in 10 hours (the time he would have had in the exam). I think you would agree that the result here is spectacular.”
Year 13
Mr Meredith said of Hannah F‘s work (which has also won a Head Teacher’s Award): “This is her latest piece about viewing the world through windows. So proud of her. She submitted and made a short video to submit to ‘Grayson Perry’s Art Club’ programme on Channel 4. Fingers crossed that she will get on.”
Photography
Year 10
Mrs Thompson chose Erin O-B and Lilly J, “For being able to maintain their exceptionally high standards whilst working at home, regularly contacting me with their work and asking for advice… amazing!”
History
Year 7
Miss Lordan explains why she chose Callum F: “Callum has been doing some excellent work. I set a history task surrounding ‘living history’ getting my classes to write about what they are experiencing during this pandemic for future primary sources. Callum’s one was extremely detailed and had gone above and beyond with phone interviews with grandparents, etc which had been recommended as a challenge task.”
Year 8
Miss Becker chose Jacob J and Ellie B, who “Have consistently produced good work, particularly on WWI trenches and weapons.”
Year 9
Miss Becker chose Ali K and James G: “Ali has produced a lot of good work. She had put in lots of effort and been on time with excellent organisation. James’ work has superb detail and he has been going the extra mile with independent research. Beautifully neat and organised work.”
Year 10
Miss Lordan chose Amelia T in Year 10 because she: “Went above and beyond for a timeline task that was set and really challenged herself to write out all answers to any ‘think’ questions I added on the PowerPoints. She even did extra research work to add to her understanding surrounding these questions.”
Miss Reece chose Robert M for his “Fabulous work. Consistent submission. He constantly asks question and shows a real focus with his independent work. Well done.”
Year 11
Miss Becker chose Rebecca J for the: “High quality work she submitted and responding to questions to really develop her level of knowledge.”
Miss Reece explained why she chose Joseph R: “Resilience and determination. He has been looking at further material to prepare himself for A level and fabulous high quality response. Well done.”
