Dear Parents and Carers
My weekends are dominated by sport, a combination of ferrying my lad around to various fixtures and training and watching it on TV. Each weekend sees the usual menu of various sports’ league fixtures and events, but on the national stage there has been a lot to watch and celebrate. Last weekend was an early start for the Women’s Rugby World Cup Final, New Zealand vs England. England looked in control but an early red card for England was always going to be tough to counter and as it was, the last play of the game saw England 3 points down with a line out just 5 metres from the New Zealand line. England’s lineout had been immense all match, proving far too strong for the New Zealanders to match, so a last-minute try seemed to be there for the taking. However, unfortunately not, and the one fumbled line out all match saw England lose the final. Nevertheless, a great start to a week of sport, which saw England win the 20/20 Cricket World Cup, the men and women’s teams play in the Rugby League World Cup semi-finals (with the men’s team losing by one point) and the men’s wheelchair rugby team make it to their World Cup final tonight. I also believe there is a competition kicking off on Sunday which may draw a crowd. Seems like the wrong time of year to me, but could be worth a watch (though not at school on Monday afternoon in answer to the kids who have asked).
I’ve always loved sport and whilst there were ups and downs at secondary school when I was there, sport was the greatest draw and the environment I enjoyed the most. I hope that the recent successes in sport prove to inspire our students to take advantage of the opportunities here at Myton. There are an awful lot of them; football for boys and girls, netball, badminton, basketball, rugby (though only boys at the moment, need more girls to express an interest and it can start), hockey, trampolining, street dance and quite a few more as we go through the year. I look forward to seeing more students getting involved in sports and, if there are sports we are yet to offer as clubs, then talk to the PE department, they enjoy that type of conversation.
Best wishes
