Dear Parents and Carers
The death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was both foreseen and inevitable but no less shocking for that and the shock will continue to reverberate throughout the period of national mourning and beyond. For nearly all of us, the Queen has been the only monarch we have ever known and throughout our lives has been a unifying influence on the country even when society and politics has threatened division and fracture.
Details of the period of mourning will be released in due course including what the arrangements mean for schools. In the meantime, we have encouraged, through some slides and live news, discussion in Tutor time this morning and will continue to do so over the next few days.
Maybe the Queen’s words on her 21st birthday in 1947 are a good place to begin reflecting on her life:
“I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.”
There can be no argument she lived this promise every day of her 70 year reign.
Best wishes
