Dear Parents and Carers
This is the last Weekly News of the academic year and whilst there has been more staff cover than usual, especially in January and February due to Covid, it has been a full academic year with no lockdowns or contact tracing. It’s worth remembering that, if your child is in Year 9, the last full, uninterrupted school year they had was Year 6, for our Year 7s it was Year 4. I hope that this past year has served to get everybody “match fit” again so we can make even more progress in the coming year.
This week we have held Awards Celebrations for Years 7 and 8 which has been a lovely experience. All departments nominated students for awards which meant we presented around 70 or 80 certificates to over 50 students, with some getting multiple nominations. These certificates are awards for the effort these students have put in all year and, as we tell them, it is all about effort. All students have subjects they are stronger in and others they find more difficult but what unifies these students, and many others who may have missed out this year, is that they try hard in every lesson, every day and it is the work ethic they develop which will make them successful.
I also met a Year 8 student, Serena, who has won the right to represent England in the European Championship Boxing in Turkey over the summer. I spent a very happy tutor time discussing her favourite boxers, what it felt like to be in the ring and how she keeps her discipline even after getting hit (remembering the Mike Tyson quote – “everyone has a plan until you get punched in the mouth.”). I am sure we all wish her well in this competition and we look forward to seeing her continuing her stunning success.
Finally, I would like to say a thank you and goodbye to all the colleagues leaving Myton this year. There are a couple of colleagues leaving after working here for a long time though none more so than Dr Menezes who retires after 30 years at Myton. Dr Menezes has been a “go to” person for many of us whether it be to develop our teaching skills, develop our leadership or just to get some fresh ideas. She is a force to be reckoned with and I have told her many times that line managing her is like trying to hold on to the very tip of a whirlwind, and I will miss her greatly. She retires with the best wishes of all her colleagues, her hundreds of ex colleagues and her many, many thousands of ex-students.
With very best wishes to you all for the summer break!
