Dear Parents and Carers
As a maths teacher myself, I am always keen to share my love of the subject with students and help them to see how important maths is in everyday life. One way of getting this message across is by taking maths out of the classroom. We run various initiatives in school where our maths classes get together with other subjects to explore, for example, the maths of football and other sports.
We also host and compete in several Maths Challenge events throughout the year. These are designed by the UK Maths Trust with the aim of promoting a love of problem solving through a range of different team and individual maths competitions. Each year we invite teams from local primary schools to come along and take part in the Primary Maths Challenge, our Year 7-11 students compete in the Junior and Intermediate Individual Maths Challenges and our Sixth Form mathematicians compete in team and individual challenges, usually with some success.
This week, four of our Year 8 students – Toby, Charlie, Milly and Amy – competed in a regional maths competition against other schools in the local area. They took on a series of tasks as part of Explore Learning’s Mathematicians’ Award and the results are out next week.
If any students in Year 7-9 would like to have a go at some maths with a difference, please encourage them to come along to Mrs Gunn’s Key Stage 3 Maths Club in M5 on Wednesday lunchtimes. They can try their hand at codebreaking and other problem solving challenges and hopefully find their own love of maths.
With best wishes
Andy Perry – Head Teacher
