Dear Parents and Carers
As we know, the world of work is changing at a rapid pace and employers are frequently heard bemoaning the lack of employability skills in young people applying for jobs. This week we have had a number of events designed to teach and foster employability skills, such as presenting, numeracy, team working, leadership, and critical thinking, all of which are essential in any workplace (not to mention life in general).
On Monday, our Year 7s took part in an enterprise event called the Cupcake Challenge, where they were asked to come up with an idea for a new range of cupcakes and packaging. They worked together in teams, discussed and refined their ideas, decided how to promote their brand and presented the final product to the judges.
On Tuesday, all students from Years 9-13 were invited to browse around our Careers Fair. They spoke to representatives from universities, apprenticeship providers, colleges and employers about the future careers that are open to them and the skills and qualifications needed to access them. Conversations like this require a certain level of maturity and confidence, and judging from the feedback we received from exhibitors, our students were well informed and articulate.
On Wednesday, a team of our Year 8 students competed in a practical, problem solving challenge using their science, technology, engineering and maths skills. The teams from Myton and five other local schools had the opportunity to research, design and make solutions to a genuinely tough, real-world engineering problem.
On Thursday, our Learning Resource Centre hosted an escape room-style event after school. Students had to work in teams to solve numeracy and literacy puzzles and crack the code.
This week is by no means unique. Our school calendar is full of lots of events like this and I know from talking to students that they really enjoy taking part. The fact that along the way they are developing skills that are essential for later life is an added bonus.
With best wishes
