Dear Parents & Carers
We have decided to evaluate our extra-curricular offer here at Myton. We know that our students enjoy the various sports, activities and trips that are available to them, and Ofsted always praise our programme of extra-curricular activities, but we believe we could do better.
We are taking as our starting point, the range of experiences we would like our young people to have by the time they leave school – thinking about experiences which open their minds to the world and create well balanced young adults – and designing our offer around that. This is akin to the National Trust initiative aimed at getting youngsters outdoors: ’50 Things To Do Before You’re 11 ¾’. Our version will be designed to enrich experiences, give back to the community and build skills such as creativity.
Furthermore, research shows that students achieve better results in written subjects if they can base their work on experiences rather than imagined scenarios. Our first draft had 168 ideas on it, so there’s quite a bit of work still to be done. It will go to the student senates and be subject to further consultations before we establish our own ’50 Things To Do Before You Leave Myton’, but we look forward to launching this in the new year and giving a real sense of purpose to our wider provision here at Myton.
On a different note, thank you to all those who attended our Sixth Form open evening last night. Around 180 of our Year 11s were joined by 75 Year 11s from local schools to consider their post-16 choices. The evening was busy and I thank the all the parents who took the time to speak to me and praise our staff and students for their enthusiasm and passion for Key Stage 5 learning.
With best wishes
Andy Perry – Head Teacher
