Initial Teacher Training

What do I need to take my teacher training?
training

To become a qualified teacher you will need a degree and qualified teacher status (QTS). You will need to have at least a grade C in English and maths GCSE, or can show that they have reached an equivalent standard. Candidates for primary teaching also need a grade C or equivalent in science

You will need to complete an initial teacher training (ITT) course through an ITT provider, you can do this alongside a degree, straight after a degree, as a part-time course alongside work or as a full-time course

There are a number of different types of ITT course, specific to the age group and, at secondary level, the subject that you want to teach. All courses cover the principles of teaching along with practical experience in the classroom. The right one for you will be dependant on your current qualifications and your circumstances

Master's Degree in Education
MA Education
This is a Masters Degree linked to teacher training. This course allows newly qualified teachers to acquire a masters degree at the end of their third year of teaching.
Why should I consider a Masters Degree?
All teaching staff to be encouraged to achieve a Masters qualification. This will be an excellent way to ensure your future career prospects when applying for promotion such as Head of Department etc. The first year of the programme is the full time PGCE course which will prepare you to meet the standards for the award of QTS (set down by government) as well as constituting the first year of the MSc in Education with QTS. The second year links with the induction year for newly qualified teachers in school and the remainder of the course can be completed during the second and third year of teaching.
Would I be eligible and how do I apply?
Anyone who meets the entry requirements for the PGCE course is eligible for the programme. You apply in the normal way for a PGCE through the Graduate Teacher Training Registry (GTTR). Towards the end of the first year, you can, subject to meeting certain standards, continue onto the MSc programme or you can exit with a PGCE award.
