GOVERNMENT AND POLITICS AQA (Provisional)

This course will appeal if you:
• enjoy debating current affairs and politics generally
• like doing a subject that affects your everyday life
• have a lively and enquiring mind
• would like to visit the Houses of Parliament.

What will I learn on this course?
• How to develop a critical awareness.
• The concepts of authority and power within the political system of the United Kingdom.
• The rights and responsibilities necessary for effective political participation.
• An understanding of the main political viewpoints in British Politics.
• The skills required to argue a case with relevance and coherence.
• An understanding of the theories, motives and values that underpin political decision-making.
• The role of political institutions in resolving conflict.
• The key political ideologies.

Entry Requirements

No prior knowledge of politics is required, however, it is important to have an interest in current affairs and the news. It is essential to have gained a least Grade C in English Language in order to access the concepts which underpin this subject.

What could I go on to do at the end of my course?

Students with AS or Advanced GCE Government and Politics have access to a wide range of possible career and higher education opportunities. Your written communication skills will develop, as will your ability to question information given to you. These qualities are in great demand and are recognised by employers, universities and colleges as being of great value.

Government and Politics combines well with a wide range of social science and humanities subjects leading to University courses in such areas as business, economics, law, media, languages, psychology, sociology, history and, of course politics.
