DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY- PRODUCT DESIGN EDEXCEL
A fresh approach
This all new AS/A2 specification offers a fresh approach to the dynamic environment of Design and Technology.
It seeks to:

- develop students' knowledge and understanding of, and skills and application in, product design
|
- develop students' ability to design and make products that are fit for purpose, satisfy wants or needs, and enhance our day-to-day lives
|
- give students the opportunity to demonstrate their design and technology capability
|
- develop skills in planning, research, analysis, product development, project planning and evaluation.

Good design is vital to our world and economy. It is important, therefore, that we enthuse the designers of tomorrow and impart a passion for designing their future.

Year 12 AS - Unit 1: Portfolio of creative skills
In this module students are given the opportunity to develop their creative, technical and practical skills by producing a folder of work that shows the range of skills they have . These will take the form of mini-projects such as CAD/CAM, Designing and manufacture.
This module is internally assessed and is worth 30% of the overall GCE mark.
Unit 2: Design and technology in Practice
This module focuses on the development of knowledge and understanding in the subject. It will focus on commercial practice that will include materials and processes.
This module is assessed by a 1 ½ hour examination.
Year 13 A2 – Unit 3: Designing for the future
In this module students continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of a range of modern manufacturing processes combine with contemporary design issues. The emphasis in this module is on the technological impact that design has on product sustainability.
This unit is assessed by an externally set and marked 2 hour examination.
Unit 4: Commercial Design
In this module students are given the opportunity to demonstrate all they have learnt over the course by developing a product from scratch. It is essentially a major project of their own choice. The product must be developed with a client in mind and follow the principles of design sustainability. A rare and exciting opportunity for any student
