PHYSICAL EDUCATION OCR

New A LevelSpecification for 2008
Requirements
To complete the course it is advisable that you achieve at least a C in Science.
A G.C.S.E in Physical Education is highly beneficial and again at least a C required.
Candidates who do not do G.C.S.E. P.E can also be considered based on their Science results.
New A Level OCR P.E specification, September 2008.
The new specifications are highlighted below, although they are still subject to confirmation.
The focus of these specifications is on participation and performance in physical activity as part of a balanced, active and healthy lifestyle.
The aim is to:
*Increase the physical competence of the student
*Develop their involvement and effectiveness in physical activity
*Enable them to become more informed and discerning decision makers in relation to their and
others’ involvement in physical activity

Unit 1
An Introduction to Physical Education
Candidates will acquire and appreciation of topic areas including anatomy and physiology, acquiring movement skills and socio-cultural studies relating to participation in physical activity.
Anatomy & Physiology – Skeletal system, joints, muscles, motion and movement
Acquiring Skills – Information processing, Skills, Learning of skills
Socio-Cultural –Play, Schools, Provision for sport in society and Culture

Unit 2
Acquiring, developing and evaluating practical skills in Physical Education
Candidates will experience activities from across different activity and work towards responding to a live performance in one of their own assessed activities.
2 practical activities assessed.

Principles and concepts across different areas of Physical Education

This unit has 2 sections;
Section A Socio-cultural and Section B Scientific

Students study three units of the five available, at least one being from section A.

Candidates will acquire an appreciation of the historical factors that impacted upon participation and competence in physical activity

Candidates will acquire an appreciation of the sports psychology factors that impact upon participation and competence in physical activity

Candidates will acquire an appreciation of how the body changes as a result of physical activity.

Unit 4
The Improvement of effective performance and the critical evaluation of physical activities in Physical Education
Candidates will build upon the skills acquired and developed in Unit 2 in one of their chosen activities and work towards responding to a live performance in their own assessed activity.
