MATHEMATICS AS/A Level EDEXCEL
All AS students will study 2 Pure Mathematics modules, C1 and C2, and 1 application. The application will be either Mechanics or Statistics. The final choice will be determined by the option block in which they will be studying Maths. This, in turn, is determined by their choice of subjects. At the end of Year 12 all students will take exams in the 3 modules studied leading to an AS in Mathematics. In Year 13, A Level students will continue to study a further 2 Pure Maths modules, C3 and C4 and Decision Maths D1.
FURTHER MATHEMATICS AS/A Level
It is possible to study 2 AS Levels in Mathematics – Mathematics and Further Mathematics. Students will need to choose both subjects (Further Mathematics is dependent upon Mathematics). Students can then continue to the full Al Level in Further Mathematics in Year 13. Depending on numbers choosing this subject, students may do the A Level Maths in Year 12 and then Further Maths A Level in Year 13 rather than the 2 AS Levels in Year 12.
FURTHER MATHEMATICS AS AND A2
Students studying Further Maths will study more of each of the areas of Mathematics. The topics on the Pure syllabus include complex numbers, series, matrix algebra and proof.
For Further Maths AS it is likely you will study FP1, S1 and S2.
FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES – MATHS A LEVEL
USE OF MATHEMATICS - AS
The AS Use of Mathematics consists of 3 Free-Standing Mathematics Qualifications.
All students study
• Working with Algebraic and Graphical techniques
• Either Using and Applying Statistics or Modelling with Calculus
• Applying Mathematics
The first 2 of these can be assessed individually, and can contribute to UCAS points, but the third does not stand alone and can only be taken as a module leading to the AS Use of Mathematics Qualification.
