School Counselling Service at Myton

Myton School employs a school counsellor who is available to all students. The counselling service provides a regular safe and supportive space for young people to express and explore their thoughts, feelings, behaviours, worries and difficulties with a counsellor who is non-judgmental, empathetic, and respectful.

Our counsellor has vast experience of working with children and young people and is professionally trained, fully qualified and checked by the Criminal Records Bureau.

There’s an appointment system and students can access our counsellor by one of the following methods:

Direct Referral

The student is referred to the service (with consent) by a senior member of staff. This may follow a suggestion from parents, teachers, or by the person themselves.

External Referral

Sometimes referrals are received via GPs, CAMHS (Child Adolescent Mental Health Service), social workers and other external agencies. Normally this takes place following a discussion with the young person’s parents or carers.

Self-Referral

Students may choose to self-refer to our counsellor. They can go directly to her for advice and guidance or engage in a consultation with her.

Drop In Service

Students can informally chat with the school counsellor before school, at break/lunchtime or after school. In an emergency you may call in to see the counsellor (if she is not already with a client) or you may prefer to make an appointment. Alternatively, you can speak with her via the Myton School telephone number – 01926 493805.

Confidentiality

The counsellor treats all personal information in confidence. However, she will liaise with the Student Welfare Manager on a regular basis and provide her with names of students being counselled for safeguarding reasons.

If a student is deemed ‘at risk’ for any reason, our counsellor will immediately pass on this information to the Designated Staff for Child Protection. This complies with the confidentiality and Child Protection procedures of Myton School.  In such instances, the Designated Staff for Child Protection will liaise with parents/carers and outside agencies as appropriate and in accordance with our Child Protection guidelines, the Head Teacher will also be kept fully informed.

All student notes are securely stored.
