How assessment is changing at Myton

Key Stage 3

The systems schools use for describing students’ progress and reporting this home to parents is changing. The new National Curriculum (introduced September 2014) no longer has assessment levels and although schools are being told they must continue to assess, and report to parents, the progress children are making in Key Stage 3, there is no national system and instead schools are encouraged to create their own. This new system will be required for Year 7 students from September 2016.

Throughout 2015-16 Myton School worked with local primaries and other secondary schools to create a system of assessment that will continue throughout Key Stages 2 & 3 to support a smooth transition from primary to secondary school. For the current year 8, however, we will continue to use our current system of sub-levels, e.g. 5.2, 5.5, 5.8 etc. with the descriptors amended to reflect the changes to the new content in the National Curriculum.

Key Stage 4

GCSEs are also changing over the next few years and as Myton delivers a three-year Key Stage 4 we start earlier than other schools. Over several years there are a series of changes, starting with English and maths in the first round. This is followed by History, Geography and Sciences the next year and most other subjects the year after. The new GCSEs will not be graded A*-G, instead they will be graded 9-1. We will deliver a curriculum that reflects these changes and prepares our students for the new style exams. We will assess students’ progress and report home to parents using the new style GCSE grading when it is appropriate to do so.
